HO Scale
Model train sets come in various "sizes" or "scales". HO Scale is a small scale of model trains (1/87th of the actual size) and is the most popular for most train enthusiasts.
It can best be described as a small scale of model trains and is the most popular size of layout for most train hobbyists. Since HO scale is the most popular, it has the widest variety of accessories. HO Scale is larger than N, but allows more realistic layouts than the larger scales given the same amount of space. For this reason, it is a great compromise between trains that are to small and those that are too big.

One of the nice things about working in HO scale is the amount of detail parts and figures available. The HO scale is the traditional, home set scale, where kids first get their taste of model railroading, but like anything else, there are serious "BIG" kids who collect these as well. HO scale is small enough that you can have a decent layout about the size of a dining room table. Conversely a train set that is smaller than HO Scale (like "N" and "Z") are often too small and delicate for many young kids to enjoy.
In HO scale your imagination is the only limit when it comes to modeling a train layout. HO electric model trains are versitle and fun. They're just plain cool, and HO scale balances great detail and features witha relatively small size making it a great choice if detail is important to you but space is somewhat limited.
If you're a newcomer to model railroading, HO Scale train sets are a great place to start. Remember the big goal of buying a HO train set is to get interested in Model Railroading, which everyone agrees is an great hobby, either for yourself or your children. How much space you have to allocate to your model railroad will help you to determine which scale, or size, you will be working with. Over time you will learn what will work bewst for you.
A final word: there are a lot of folks with excess HO Scale gear out there. Check out the offerings that Ebay has.
